Cincinnati Fieldstone

Description

Capture the Essence of Time

The stone geologically is classified as a dolomitic limestone.  The thickness of the stone ranges from 1 inch to about 10 inches in bed thickness, with lengths reaching up to 30 square feet. The stone is a sedimentary limestone that is a layered matrix of mineralized fossilized plants and animals that made up a shallow sea 530 million years ago.  The very rare fossil beds only run within a 45 minute radius of the center of Cincinnati which sits on top of this limestone arch.

Remarkably, these rare fossil beds are confined within a 45-minute radius of Cincinnati’s center, situated atop this limestone arch. Among the layers, only about 1 in every 20 limestone layers presents the premium ‘A’ quality we specialize in, meticulously selected for its absence of soft shale.

Exhibiting a rich, textured golden-brown fossil bed face, occasionally revealing iron rust within the stone, the interior, just beneath the golden-brown exterior, boasts a sky-blue-grey hue when split or dressed square. Over time, the stone’s exposed surface will naturally oxidize, transitioning to a uniform grey shade around the 17-year mark and eventually evolving into an even monochromatic grey after approximately 20 years.

With a robust compressive strength of about 7,000 psi, this stone is resilient. Our offerings include both split veneer and slab/outcropping forms, providing versatile options for various applications.
